The Silver Coin:   一枚银币（马西·斯蒂莱曼）

He had earned a silver coin and felt proud to be taking it home to his wife and children.

他已经赚到了一枚银币并且很自豪地要把它带回家给自己的妻子和孩子们。

had earned 是过去完成时态。过去完成时由“had+过去分词”构成，表示过去某时刻前业已发生的动作或情况，即“过去的过去”。

又如：

The film had already started when we got to the cinema. 我们到电影院时电影已经开映了。

She had learned a little Chinese before she came to China. 她来中国前学过一点汉语。

earn vt.   get (money) by working  赚；挣

e.g.

earn one’s money honestly靠正当手段挣钱

earn a living谋生

Mr. Smith earns $50,000 a year. 史密斯先生一年赚5万美元。

proud (of sb./sth.) / (to do sth.) / (that… ): a.  feeling pleased and satisfied about sth. you have owned or done    感到得意的；自豪的

e.g.

She is proud of her new car. 她为自己的新车感到自豪。

I feel very proud to be a part of the team. 能成为队中的一员我感到很自豪。

Our football team feels proud that it has won every match this year. 我们的足球队今年屡战屡胜,颇感自豪

The smell of frying chicken reminded the worker of how hungry he was. 油炸鸡肉的香味提醒了这个工人他是多么饥饿。

frying 是fry的现在分词，在此作定语，修饰chicken；how hungry he was 是宾语从句，作介词of的宾语。

fry  vt.  cook (sth.) or be cooked in boiling fat or oil 油煎；油炸

Please fry an egg for me. = Please fry me an egg. 请给我煎个蛋。

hungry a. suffering from weakness, pain, etc. because of lack of food; starving   饥饿的；挨饿的

He had a hungry look. 他面有饥色。

Is anyone getting hungry? 有人觉得饿吗？

All this talk of food is making me hungry. 老这么谈吃的东西勾起我的食欲了。

shady的名词是shade，为不可数名词，常指树或其他物体遮住全部或部分阳光或其他光线的阴凉处，往往有舒适之感。

We sat down in the shade of the wall. 我们在墙的背阴处坐下了。

注意shade与第19自然段里cast a tiny shadow on the ground中的shadow的区别。shadow是可数名词，指某物在光线的照射下映在地上、墙上等处的形状清晰的阴影，即由某物的shade构成的黑影或阴影是shadow“影子”。

across : prep.   on the other side of   在…的对面，在…另一边
